Photo Gallery of Cheer Day, 13 Sept 2014, UW 44, U Illinois 19

Posted by glennled on April 11, 2015

The “Fighting Illini” of the University of Illinois came to Husky Stadium and went home without a victory, losing to the University of Washington Huskies, 44-19, on Cheer Day–the annual football game when high school cheerleaders come from all over the state to participate with the Husky Cheerleaders and Varsity Marching Band in the pre-game and half-time activities. And, of course, the Husky Alumni Band participates, too–and I’m a member! In the half-time show, the Varsity Band commemorated the 50th anniversary of The Beatle’s concert in Seattle.

Below is a gallery of photos, featuring lots of trumpeters, from the game. Louis Figueroa took the field-level shots, and Garry Nakayama took those from the press box. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

Husky Alumni Band Cheers UW to Victory Over Stanford, 17-13

Posted by glennled on October 16, 2012

Victory celebration!

Everyone knows that while Husky Stadium is now being rebuilt for next year, the football team is playing its home games in downtown Seattle at Century Link Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders. Everyone sees the UW Husky Varsity Marching Band on the stadium steps at the north entrance prior to the game, in the south stands during the game, and on the field for pre-game and half-time shows. But who knows whether the Husky Alumni Band is even there—and if so, where are they?

Well, yes, we were there Thursday night (27 September) to see the Huskies upset the 8th-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 17-13. We were seated in the SW quadrant of the stadium—high up in Section 327!—cheering as loudly as everyone else.

We played at three pep rallies prior to the game, one with the Chinese Dragon at Hing Hay Park in the International District, one in the north parking lot of the stadium, and one in Occidental Street on the west side of the stadium. That earned us free tickets into this big game. Recall that there was a time when it was questionable whether the Husky Alumni Band would have a role to play at the home games this year (see my post of 18 November 2011), but that was settled. We’re there, helping raise money for HMBAA scholarships, and we’re very happy. It’s such fun, and I love playing trumpet. Some of us even joined the massive crowd on the field after the game to celebrate the victory. Go Huskies!

It’s SO Fun to be in Band! Photo Gallery of UW-UH Game

Charge!

On 10 September, the University of Washington Huskies football team improved its record to 2-0 with a 40-32 victory over the University of Hawaii Warriors. This was the 59th Annual High School Band Day, attracting more than 2400 participants.

Most of these photos were taken by Louis Figueroa (on the field) and Garry Nakayama (in the pressbox), and a few were by me, as a trumpeter in the Husky Alumni Band.

800 Cheerleaders & Dancers Perform in Spectacular UW Husky Half-time Show!

Posted by glennled on November 11, 2010

Half-time Finale to ABBA's hit song, "Waterloo"

Wow, this was spectacular…you should see the videos below! At the UW-Stanford football game on 30 October, about 800 cheerleaders and dancers from 44 junior high and high schools from Washington performed for the fans during the half-time show. It’s such a big show that it’s sponsored by the Cheerleaders of America (COA), headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and it bears the official name, “Second Annual UW Half-time Spirit Extravaganza.”

The theme, chosen by the UW Husky Varsity Marching Band, was music by the famous group, ABBA. The cheer/dance teams performed a featured routine to a medley of ABBA songs, followed by a mass scramble to spell out “HUSKIES” to the popular sports song, “Rock and Roll Music, Part II.” The cheer/dance teams then

joined the Husky Band to cover the entire field while the band played ABBA’s “Waterloo” for the finale. Beautiful show that lifted the spirits on a cold, rainy night when the home team wasn’t doing so well on the football field—way to go!

Marching in the Seafair Torchlight Parade

Posted by glennled on August 4, 2010

Parade photos by Elliot Suhr, seattlepi.com

It’s only about 2.5 miles from the Space Needle to Qwest Field along the route of the Seafair Torchlight Parade, but if you’re in the parade, near the end, it takes many hours to get there. That’s what I learned last Saturday, when several other members of the Husky Alumni Band and I mixed in with the UW Varsity Marching Band to play our music along the parade route through downtown Seattle. The obvious enthusiasm and pleasure of the hundreds of thousands of spectators of all ages who lined the streets made the whole event very fun for us all. And the weather was perfect. Oh, what a night!

There were Seafair pirates and a police motorcade and firemen and floats and clowns and drill teams and a queen and Hawaiian princesses and military bands and school bands and cheerleaders and–you-name-it! Our band was #81 of 105 groups in the parade. Fourteen awards were presented to the best and most creative entries. The parade was sponsored by Alaska Airlines.

The UW band was big, although not full size, which you’ll see as soon as football season starts next month. About 18 of us trumpeters came for the parade. If you ever have a chance to be in the parade, don’t turn it down…it’s so much fun!
