On Friday evening, 30 September, there was a Showdown in Seattle—#7 Stanford came to Husky Stadium to face #10 Washington—and it was a Blowout. The Huskies dominated the Cardinals, 44-6, before a sellout crowd of 72,027, the largest crowd since the stadium renovation was completed in 2013 for $280 million. ESPN broadcasted the game nationwide.

This game also featured the reunion of the 1991 UW football team that won the national championship. This year is the 25th anniversary of that momentous achievement.
As a member of the UW Class of 1962, I played in the Husky Alumni Band as we performed for the Husky fans at various venues during pre-game tailgating. That entitled us to sit alongside the Husky Marching Band in the horseshoe stands at the west end of the stadium. I took the photos below. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

Since when do the University of Washington Huskies and the Washington State University Cougars ever play a football game on a Friday afternoon? Well, on 27 Nov 2015, the day after Thanksgiving—that’s when they played the 108th Apple Cup at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
And not only was the weather sunny, but also, for Husky fans, so were the results. The Huskies chased the Cougars back to the Palouse, 45-10!
Normally, I attend at least two home games each season as a member of the Husky Alumni Band, playing trumpet. This year, I attended only this one. Great choice! We play for the fans prior to the game at numerous venues surrounding the stadium, including the boat docks. Then we get to watch the game, free! We sit alongside the UW Varsity Band, adjacent to the student section.
Both schools are playing in bowl games this year in Texas on the same day, 26 December (it’s a Saturday). Who will win? one or both or neither?
UW (6-6, 4-5 Pac-12) plays Southern Miss (9-4, 7-2 Conference USA) in Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl at Cotton Bowl Stadium. WSU (8-4, 6-3 Pac 12) plays Miami (8-4, 5-3 ACC) in the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.
Please click on any photo to enlarge it. Naturally, I favor pictures of trumpeters playing “Victory for Washington” and “Bow Down to Washington.” I wonder how many of them took private trumpet lessons. Band is so much fun!

Georgia State hardly had a chance–the University of Washington Huskies never (hardly ever) loose on High School Band Day! And two-legged dogs always beat two-legged cats, no? And so it was on 20 September 2014, that UW came out on top, 45-14, scoring all 45 points in the second half. The first half was a stinker for the Huskies, who got booed off the field into the locker room to re-group. In any case, the win left the Huskies with a 4-0 record thus far in the season.
Could it be that the combined bands’ massive half-time show on High School Band Day inspired the Huskies to come back from 0-14 to win? 😉
Here’s how the bands did it—see the photo gallery below. As always, trumpeters are featured. Field-level shots were taken by Louis Figueroa, and press box shots were by Garry Nakayama. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

The “Fighting Illini” of the University of Illinois came to Husky Stadium and went home without a victory, losing to the University of Washington Huskies, 44-19, on Cheer Day–the annual football game when high school cheerleaders come from all over the state to participate with the Husky Cheerleaders and Varsity Marching Band in the pre-game and half-time activities. And, of course, the Husky Alumni Band participates, too–and I’m a member! In the half-time show, the Varsity Band commemorated the 50th anniversary of The Beatle’s concert in Seattle.
Below is a gallery of photos, featuring lots of trumpeters, from the game. Louis Figueroa took the field-level shots, and Garry Nakayama took those from the press box. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

It was the first Saturday of September, 2014. This was the first home game of the football season for the University of Washington Huskies and the second game under new Coach Chris Petersen. The opponent was the Eastern Washington University Eagles from Cheney, Washington near Spokane. The Huskies won, 59-52, in a wild shootout.
Below is a gallery of photos. featuring the Husky Varsity Marching Band trumpeters, from the game. I am a member of the Husky Alumni Band. Shots from the pressbox are by Garry Nakayama, and those from field level are by Louis Figueroa. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

High School Cheerleaders Day, UW Husky Stadium, 11-9-’13
At a night game in Seattle on 9 November 2013, the University of Washington Huskies drubbed the University of Colorado Buffaloes, 59-7. Quarterback Keith Price was 22 of 29 in passing for 312 yards and had two passing TDs and two rushing TDs. Running Back Bishop Sankey rushed for 143 yards.
All that’s very well indeed, but credit must be given where credit is due–it was High School Cheerleaders Day, so with that much support, it was impossible for the Huskies to lose!
As a member of the Husky Alumni Band, I got to play my cornet again for the tail-gaters. I asked the band director if we could play “Hey Baby” which came out in 1961. We did, entertaining fans down on the boats moored to the docks at the shoreline of Lake Washington. Everybody loves to sing along and dance to those lyrics–“Hey, hey hey baby! I want to know if you’ll be my girl.” With a thousand cheerleaders at the game and the Huskies winning so easily, who wouldn’t be happy?!
Here is a photo gallery of the game, focused on the UW Husky Marching Band (especially the trumpets) and Cheerleaders, plus all the high school cheerleaders. Field-level shots are by Louis Figueroa, and press-box shots are by Garry Nakayama. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

UW Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. Brad McDavid
On 21 September 2013, the University of Washington Husky Marching Band, under the direction of Dr. Brad McDavid, hosted its annual “Band Day.” In 2013, the Husky Marching Band, created in 1929, commenced its 84th season.
Selected high school bands from all over the state performed in the second home football game held in the newly renovated Husky Stadium in Seattle. The Huskies beat the Bengals of Idaho State University, 56-0, and as a member of the Husky Alumni Band, I got to play my 59-year old Super Olds cornet again. I’m of the UW Class of 1962.
The photos below were taken by Louis Figueroa (ground level) and Garry Nakayama (press box level). Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

Victory celebration!
Everyone knows that while Husky Stadium is now being rebuilt for next year, the football team is playing its home games in downtown Seattle at Century Link Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders. Everyone sees the UW Husky Varsity Marching Band on the stadium steps at the north entrance prior to the game, in the south stands during the game, and on the field for pre-game and half-time shows. But who knows whether the Husky Alumni Band is even there—and if so, where are they?
Well, yes, we were there Thursday night (27 September) to see the Huskies upset the 8th-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 17-13. We were seated in the SW quadrant of the stadium—high up in Section 327!—cheering as loudly as everyone else.

UW Husky Varsity Marching Band
We played at three pep rallies prior to the game, one with the Chinese Dragon at Hing Hay Park in the International District, one in the north parking lot of the stadium, and one in Occidental Street on the west side of the stadium. That earned us free tickets into this big game. Recall that there was a time when it was questionable whether the Husky Alumni Band would have a role to play at the home games this year (see my post of 18 November 2011), but that was settled. We’re there, helping raise money for HMBAA scholarships, and we’re very happy. It’s such fun, and I love playing trumpet. Some of us even joined the massive crowd on the field after the game to celebrate the victory. Go Huskies!
