After 15 successful years as Director of Instrumental Music at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell, Mr. Shawn McGinn is leaving for California in the coming months.
He conducted his final elementary school bands concert on 27 May at the Northshore Performing Arts Center (NPAC) at Bothell High School. The two bands (1st year and 2nd year) are comprised of students from nearby Crystal Springs, Canyon Creek, and Fernwood elementary schools.
The 1st year band played Bang the Drum All Day (I Don’t Want to Work) by Todd Rundgren, arranged by Michael Story.
As guest conductor, I then led the 2nd year band in playing Andromeda Overture by Mark Williams.
Finally, both bands joined in playing William Tell Overture by Gioacchino Rossini, arranged by Andrew Balent.
The concert concluded with a jazz trio jam session featuring piano, tenor sax, and flugelhorn, played by Mr. McGinn.

2015 NSD 6th Grade Honors Orchestra (left), Choir (center), and Band (right)
In a stellar performance, three honors groups—the best NSD musicians of 2015—entertained a packed house at Northshore Junior High School in Bothell on 10 February at the annual Northshore School District’s (NSD’s) Sixth Grade Honors Concert.

NSD 6th Grade Honors Band (right), Choir (center), and Orchestra (left)
First was the Honors Orchestra, conducted by Jim Rice of Inglemoor High School. Next was the Honors Choir, conducted by Kyra Renstorf of Woodinville High School and Leota Junior High School. Finally was the Honors Band, conducted by Janie McDavid of Shelton View Elementary and Kenmore Junior High School. [Incidentally, Mrs. McDavid’s husband is Dr. Brad McDavid, Director of Athletic Bands, University of Washington, who is featured in numerous posts in this blog.] Each group performed four pieces. The program was emceed by Ted Christensen of Inglemoor High School (IHS), who is Music Coordinator for the Northshore School District. This is his 32nd year at IHS.
Below is a gallery of photos from the concert. As usual in this blog, I highlight trumpeters in the band, three of whom I teach at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell. In all, Skyview contributed 12 musicians to the Honors Band. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

I’m back! Lucky me, commencing on 8 September 2014, with the first class of this school year, I get to continue teaching beginning brass students at Skyline Jr. High School in Bothell. Fifth and sixth grade band students arrive early in the morning at Skyline for band classes, and afterwards, they go to their respective schools, Fernwood, Crystal Springs, and Canyon Creek elementary schools for regular classes. Shawn McGinn is the Director of Instrumental Music at Skyline.
I teach brass sectionals on Mondays-Thursdays, including trumpets, trombones, French horns, and baritones. On Fridays, I teach the full 2nd year elementary band, comprised of 6th graders. We present three concerts by the fifth and sixth grade bands each year. It’s fun!

Shawn McGinn, Director of Instrumental Music, Skyview Jr. High School, Bothell, WA
For the first time, on 28 May, the first- and second-year elementary bands of Skyview Jr. High School got to perform a concert on the big stage at Northshore Performance Art Center (NPAC) on the Bothell High School campus. Mr. Shawn McGinn is Director of Instrumental Music at Skyview.
The concert began with the first-year band playing a piece in four movements: “Alpha Overture,” “Rock-It,” “Yuki,” and “The Bingo Polka,” arranged by Jack Bullock. They concluded with “Apollo Fanfare” by Robert W. Smith.
Next came the second-year band playing three pieces: “Mystic Dance” by Michael Sweeney; “Let It Go,” by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, arranged by Jems Kazik; and “William Tell Overture,” by Giocchino Rossini, arranged by Andrew Balent.
The first-year band is comprised mostly of fifth graders from Crystal Springs, Fernwood, and Canyon Creek Elementary Schools. The second-year band members are mostly sixth graders from the same schools. There are 20 trumpeters in the first-year band and four in the second-year band.

On 1 April, four bands from Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell gathered before a gym-full of parents, relatives, and friends to present their “Skyview Spring with Tunes and Swing” concert in the SJHS gymnasium.

Glenn Ledbetter prepares to conduct Skyview Jr. High School’s second-year band, 1 April 2014
On Fridays, I rehearse the second-year band, and Mr. Shawn McGinn, Director of Instrumental Music, graciously let me conduct one piece (“Front and Center”) that night. It was the first time I ever conducted a band in public–what fun! The feeling was kind of like playing with a wind-up toy–first you practice, practice, practice to acquire the skill, and then on concert night, you just let it go and it does its own thing, automatically, perfectly! I was so proud of the kids.
The first-year elementary band (mostly 5th graders) played “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “Eye of the Tiger.” The second-year elementary band (mostly 6th graders) played “Front and Center,” “Clarinet Boogie,” and “I’m a Believer.” Then came the 7th-grade band from SJHS, playing “The Tempest,” “A Song for Friends,” and “Furioso.” And finally, the Skyview Jazz Band played “Dorian Journey,” “Moanin’,” “Work Song,” and “Mr. PC.”

On 6 December 2013, two elementary school bands performed their Winter Concert for parents, relatives and friends at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell. The first-year (5th grade) band and the second-year (6th grade) band are quite a contrast in size but not in quality–both are developing very well at their respective levels. Shawn McGinn, Director of Instrumental Music, was on materity leave at the time, so Sarah Lawson, his substitute, conducted the concert.

Skyview Jr. High School, Bothell, WA
On 16 September 2013, I resumed teaching beginning brass at Skyview Jr. High School (SJHS). Students from three elementary schools come to SJHS for classes from 7:55-8:35 a.m. The three elementary schools are Canyon Creek, Fernwood, and Crystal Springs. A few students from other nearby schools also attend.
First-year band students come on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for sectional classes, and second-year band students come on Mondays and Wednesdays. Then on Fridays, I conduct a class for the whole second-year band. Mr. Shawn McGinn has been Director of Instrumental Music at SJHS since 1999, and has taught over 10,000 students! His students feed into Bothell High School.
There are numerous other posts, with photos, on this blog about the many band concerts that have been held at Skyview and at the Northshore Performing Arts Center in Bothell since I’ve been been teaching trumpet and other brass instruments here.

The two elementary bands were joined at their final concert of the 2011-12 school year by the 8th-9th grade band on 15 May at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell. The elementary students come from Fernwood, Crystal Springs, and Canyon Creek elementary schools. The concert was conducted by Mr. Shawn McGinn, Director of Instrumental Music. I am his assistant for elementary brass instruction (trumpet, trombone, French horn, and baritone). The concert left the parents, relatives and friends in the audience excited about the benefits to and growth of these kids through playing music! We hope many will go to a summer band camp. Here are selected photos from the concert. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

Jazz combos played as the crowd seated itself in the gym at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell last Tuesday night, 3 April. And the Jazz Band I finished the night’s concert with some high energy, big band sounds and solos. Sandwiched in between these two on the program were performances by the 1st-year (5th grade) and 2nd-year (6th grade) elementary bands and the 3rd-year (7th grade) junior high band. The concert left the parents, relatives and friends in the audience feeling very good about the strength and benefits of these kids being in band! Here are selected photos from the concert.
