NSD 6th-grade Honors Orchestra and Choir, 2016
Three hundred and thirty-three students from the Northshore School District made the Honors Orchestra, Choir and Band this year and played a concert for their parents, relatives, teachers, and friends at Northshore Jr. High School in Bothell on 9 February. And among them, three (~1%) are my students in elementary band at Skyview Jr. High—one trumpeter, one baritonist, and one trombonist. I’m in my fifth year as a para-professional teacher of beginning brass for fifth and sixth graders who come to Skyview from Crystal Springs, Canyon Creek, and Fernwood elementary schools for classes each week.
Guest conductors were Eileen Treusch (orchestra), Darcy Morrissey (choir), and Frank Halferty (band). The program allotted four pieces to the orchestra, five to the choir, and three to the band. If this were a contest instead of a concert and if I were an adjudicator, I would give the “Best Performance Award” to Darcy Morrissey and her choir. The orchestra was 111 members strong, but the choir was even larger: 128! And the band was 96; that’s a big band, too. I wonder what percentage of the band students are taking private lessons—20%, 10%, 5%? That’s how you “Become your Best” (my motto). And that’s how you eventually make Washington State Band in high school.

On 6 December 2013, two elementary school bands performed their Winter Concert for parents, relatives and friends at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell. The first-year (5th grade) band and the second-year (6th grade) band are quite a contrast in size but not in quality–both are developing very well at their respective levels. Shawn McGinn, Director of Instrumental Music, was on materity leave at the time, so Sarah Lawson, his substitute, conducted the concert.

Skyview Jr. High School, Bothell, WA
On 16 September 2013, I resumed teaching beginning brass at Skyview Jr. High School (SJHS). Students from three elementary schools come to SJHS for classes from 7:55-8:35 a.m. The three elementary schools are Canyon Creek, Fernwood, and Crystal Springs. A few students from other nearby schools also attend.
First-year band students come on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for sectional classes, and second-year band students come on Mondays and Wednesdays. Then on Fridays, I conduct a class for the whole second-year band. Mr. Shawn McGinn has been Director of Instrumental Music at SJHS since 1999, and has taught over 10,000 students! His students feed into Bothell High School.
There are numerous other posts, with photos, on this blog about the many band concerts that have been held at Skyview and at the Northshore Performing Arts Center in Bothell since I’ve been been teaching trumpet and other brass instruments here.

As the fans filled the stands in the gym at Skyview Junior High in Bothell, they were entertained by Arcade Mocha, a jazz combo formed by eight students in 2011. People were coming for the Winter Concert of the orchestra and 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade bands. Arcade Mocha played Christmas songs and other pieces for half an hour before the concert began.

Vaughan has been my trumpet student since 2010
It was their 19th gig so far (see http://www.facebook.com/ArcadeMocha?ref=ts&fref=ts). They play for festivals, auctions, fundraisers, variety shows, promotional events, and such at malls, stores, coffee shops, churches, schools, and more. For example, during the holidays in 2011, they played at the Barnes and Noble Book Fair in Woodinville, and twice in 2012, they played at the Crossroads Mall in Bellevue. Last November, they played at “This is the Night,” the Skyview Spaghetti Dinner, and helped raise $1,700 in funds for the Music Boosters and
Music Department of the school. Musically, they’ve stepped up into jazz circles by playing twice at afternoon gigs at Tula’s Jazz Club in Belltown in Seattle (see www.tulas.com).
This group of talented teenage musicians launched from the Skyview Jr. High music program (see http://www.nsd.org/education/staff/staff.php?sectionid=429). They practice, using The Real Book of charts, every Saturday at the home of their booking agent, Dianne Kinney, 425-275-8696, dianne@adamkinney.com.

The two elementary bands were joined at their final concert of the 2011-12 school year by the 8th-9th grade band on 15 May at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell. The elementary students come from Fernwood, Crystal Springs, and Canyon Creek elementary schools. The concert was conducted by Mr. Shawn McGinn, Director of Instrumental Music. I am his assistant for elementary brass instruction (trumpet, trombone, French horn, and baritone). The concert left the parents, relatives and friends in the audience excited about the benefits to and growth of these kids through playing music! We hope many will go to a summer band camp. Here are selected photos from the concert. Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

On Thursday, 8 December, the parents and relatives gathered at band period (7:55-8:35 a.m.) to hear their kids play in the band in the school cafeteria at Skyview Junior High School in Bothell. For the 1st-year band, it was their first concert ever, and the featured song was “Jingle Bells.” Then the 2nd year band played two pieces: “Apollo Fanfare” by Robert W. Smith and “Five Christmas Favorites,” a medley. The band director is Shawn McGinn, and I am his assistant for brass instruction (trumpet, trombone, baritone, and French horn). 1st Year Elementary Band
Happy young musicians make proud parents and teachers. The proof was in the final concert of the school year for the two elementary bands and the jazz combo which performed in the gym at Skyview Jr. High in Bothell on 31 May.

2nd-Year Elementary Band
The 58-member first-year band performed four movements of a piece by Jack Bullock: “Alpha Overture; Rock-It; Yuki; The Bingo Polka.”
The 37-member second-year band performed “Na Na Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” by A.F. Dale, P.R. Leka and G. Carla, as arranged by Eric Osterling, and “Legend of the Alhambra,” by Mark Williams.
The 8-member jazz combo performed “Autumn Leaves” by Joseph Kosura and Johnny Mercer and “Watermelon Man” by Herbie Hancock.

Jazz Combo (plus vocalist, not shown)
The concert was interrupted to pay tribute to the leader, Mr. Shawn McGinn. During the past several weeks, band members had made donations toward the purchase of a gift, and the two assistants, Candice Palmberg (flutes) and me (brass), supplemented their contributions. In all, $152 was collected, and a gift certificate from Babies-R-Us was presented to him. He and his wife are expecting their first baby in early July! Mr. McGinn is going to be a wonderful father. With those two good parents, that kid is very lucky!
The brass section of the 2nd-year elementary had secretly prepared its own special treat for Mr. McGinn. As a surprise and on behalf of all his students, they played the chorus of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” to honor him for his inspirational, fun instruction and leadership. Mr. McGinn encouraged everyone to stay in practice during the summer and come back next fall for a very special school year in band!

7th Grade Band (center), 5th Grade Band (left) & 6th Grade Band (right)
“Have you ever seen or heard anything like it?” “No, never!” “How was it?” “Unbelievable!”
That’s how the proud audience of parents, relatives, and friends felt after the 5th, 6th, and 7th-grade bands performed their concert in the gynmasium at Skyview Jr. High School in Bothell last Thursday night.

1st-Year Elementary Band
The concert began with the 5th Grade Band playing “Furioso,” followed by the 6th Grade Band’s “American Spirit March.” Then the 7th Grade Band played three pieces: “The Firebird,” “Black is the Color,” and “Legend of the Alhambra.” Next, Mr. Shawn McGinn, Director of Instrumental Music, joined this band’s percussionists in performing a Latin piece, “Mario Brothers.”
For the finale, Mr. Ginn conducted the combined 6th-7th Grade Bands in the dramatic piece, “Second Storm.”
It is remarkable to witness the progress being made by all these young musicians [especially the trumpet and trombone players, I say]! Band is so fun!
